Ensuring Human Rights and Realizing Civil Society Social Action

BAIK Tae-Ung  [Professor, William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii]

I would like to address the following three topics related to human rights cities and civil society. First, the world today is facing significant and unprecedented challenges against human rights and the space for civil society is shrinking. Second, the geopolitical situation in Asia and on the Korean Peninsula is rapidly changing amid the strategic competition between the United States and China, leading to a rise in nationalism, while civil society is finding itself in a difficult position. Lastly, there are significant ongoing challenges against human rights in Korea as well, and therefore, it requires civil society to aggressively respond to these issues.

Therefore, I believe that we must start a movement of ‘Taking One Step in Social Practicing’. I trust that the small actions we take at this moment will accumulate to change our future. We need to take just one step for justice, peace, environment, labor liberalization, and common good. I believe it is necessary for all members of civil society to unite, participate, gather, and speak out and take action on issues in order to start right away with direct practices. By doing so, we can create a healthy society and state where democracy and human rights are secured. It is time for everyone to come together and take a step towards social action.
