Let us walk without worries! Let us ride without fears!

Doyeon [Standing Activist, Gwang-Ju Human Rights Center Hwal Jjak]

In 2015, there was an incident in Daegu where a visually impaired person fell into an open manhole while passing by a construction site (Daegu Newsis, April 23, 2015). In 2019, in Dalseong-gun, a visually impaired individual tripped over a bollard installed to prevent vehicle entry, resulting in a 12-week injury from a lumbar fracture (Law Leader, April 29, 2019). On March 13, 2023, in Mokpo, a visually impaired person walking on the sidewalk collided with a transformer that was installed on the sidewalk, resulting in a laceration on the person’s forehead. Up until now, these incidents have been stories of others from other regions.

Civic space is fundamentally about having a barrier-free physical environment, at least when it comes to walking along sidewalks and using public transportation. If such civic space is not created in that sense, a human rights city cannot even be imagined or established. I hope that the discussions we have here can directly contribute to the creation of civic space.
