Second Planning Subcommittee Meeting Held

On April 4, 2024, Planning Subcommittee (PSC) meeting was held at the conference room on the 14th floor of Gwangju Metropolitan City Hall to discuss the prospective invitees for the Opening Ceremony and Plenary Session of the World Human Rights Cities Forum (WHRCF) and to finalize the concept note. The meeting was conducted aiming to concertize the opinions expressed at the first PSC meeting held in March.

The meeting began with a discussion on keynote speakers for the Opening Ceremony to be held on October 10. As this year's WHRCF is planned to be conducted primarily as a face-to-face event, it was suggested that a speaker from within Korea should be invited, considering the necessity of being present on-site. At the same time, due to the fact that the theme focuses on civic space, it was suggested that it would be appropriate to invite a prominent figure in the field to increase the participation of the general public.

Taking the above two suggestions into consideration, the discussion on who among the prominent domestic speakers would be able to explain the theme from a comprehensive perspective. As a result, it was decided that the author U Si-min, and professor of Law at the University of Hawaii, BAIK Tae-ung, would be most suitable as the keynote speakers for the Opening Ceremony.

Potential invitees for the Plenary Session were then discussed. In order to organize the Plenary Session in a way that would allow for a multidisciplinary understanding of the theme, three presentation themes were decided on and the invitation of experts in each of the fields was then discussed.

The three presentation themes proposed at the previous meeting included: Reality of Civic Space and Human Rights Issues, Ways to Expand Civic Space-Focusing on Digital Space, and Civic Space Case Studies and Good Practices. While a number of speakers were considered, the meeting concluded with a consensus to invite the former Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, WAGL Chair, LEE Jinsun, and author Rebecca Solnit, respectively.

The WHRCF Secretariat will hold the second International Steering Committee meeting in April to collect further recommendations for international speakers, based on the results of the second PSC meeting, after which the invitation process will officially begin.

Meanwhile, the 14th World Human Rights Cities Forum concept note can now be found on the official WHRCF website.
