Third Planning Subcommittee Meeting Held
On May 28, 2024, another meeting of the Planning Subcommittee (PSC) was held at the conference room on the 14th floor of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Hall to further discuss the organization and invitees for the Opening Ceremony and Plenary Session of the 14th World Human Rights Cities Forum (the Forum). The meeting focused on introducing the international speakers recommended by the International Steering Committee during their second meeting in April, and on selecting appropriate invitees in accordance with the session structure.
First of all, the schedule and structure of the Opening Ceremony and Plenary Session were discussed. On October 10, the first day of the Forum, the Opening Ceremony, consisting of opening remarks, congratulatory remarks, and keynote speeches will be held at 2 p.m., followed by the Plenary Session at 3 p.m. At the Plenary Session, Three Speakers will present, respectively followed by three discussants, conducting meaningful exchanges on civic space.
The meeting continued with the discussion about the keynote speaker for the Opening Ceremony and the invitees for the Plenary Session. Committee members agreed to invite the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders, Mary Lawlor, recommended by UN OHCHR, to deliver the keynote speech. The invitees for the Plenary Session will include BAIK Tae-ung, Professor of Law at the University of Hawaii and LEE Jinsun, WAGL Chair, as decided at the second PSC meeting, as well as a government official from the City of Rennes, France, as recommended by the International Steering Committee, who will speak on examples of civic space management in cities, incorporating overseas examples, while as discussants, IM Taek, Gwangju Dong-gu Office Chief and SHIN Hyung-sik, Director of the Institute for Popular Sovereignty are expected to be invited.
The Forum Secretariat has already finalized the invitation of LEE Jinsun, WAGL Chair, and BAIK Tae-Ung, Professor of Law at the University of Hawaii, SHIN Hyung-sik, Director of the Institute for Popular, and will proceed with additional invitations based on the decisions of the third Planning Subcommittee meeting.
