Second International Steering Committee Meeting Held
Discussions on International Speakers for Official Events and Plenary Session Structure
On April 24, 2024, the International Steering Committee (ISC) met online to discuss speakers to be invited to the WHRCF official events and the structure of the Plenary Sessions.
Amanda Flety, Coordinator of the UCLG Committee on Social Inclusion, Participatory Democracy and Human Rights (UCLG-CSIPDHR), proposed inviting officials from local governments in Argentina that have worked hard to maintain its civic space despite internal repression, as well as a representative from the City of Rennes, France, which won an award titled “Best Practice in Citizen Participation” from the International Observatory on Participatory Democracy (IOPD) in 2023.
She also recommended a mayor from REFELA, the Network of Locally Elected Women of Africa, as a speaker for one of the Plenary Session's sub-themes, "Reality of Civic Space and Human Rights Issues," adding that it is important to hear women's voices, especially when sharing about the situation on the African continent, that is still in dire need of international attention.
Meanwhile, Pradeep Wagle, Chief of the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Section at the UN Human Rights, nominated Mary Lawlor, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.
The discussion then turned to the Plenary Session organization. The International Steering Committee agreed with the three plenary themes and proposed Korean invitees identified at the last Planning Committee meeting, adding that discussion on participatory democracy, a topic frequently addressed by UCLG-CSIPDHR, should also be included in the agenda. The meeting was concluded with the agreement to start the invitation process as soon as possible.
You can check out the past news about the invitees and sub-themes of the Plenary Session on the WHRCF website.
