Human Rights Paper Session



Peace and Solidarity: 

the Role of Human Rights Cities in Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding



Co-organizers:

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law,

the International Centre for the Promotion of Human Rights at the Local and Regional Levels under the auspices of UNESCO

the UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Human Security, University of Graz, the The May 18 Institute Chonnam National University, and

Gwangju International Center


We are co-hosting the 10th Human Rights Paper Session as a part of the World Human Rights Cities Forum 2025 being held in Gwangju, South Korea from the 15th to the 17th of May 2025. We invite human rights researchers and practitioners to submit papers on the theme "Peace and Solidarity: The Role of Human Rights Cities in Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding" with sub-themes of 

- Peace and solidarity in the context of human rights cities,

- Challenges facing human rights cities amidst war and violence, strategies for human rights cities to promote peace and reconciliation and collaboration of cities at local and global levels for peacebuilding.


Submissions may also explore themes related to human rights in urban settings.


Selected papers will be presented on-site during the WHRCF. Presenters will be invited to submit their papers for publication in “The Journal of Democracy and Human Rights”, a peer-reviewed journal indexed in the Korean Citation Index (KCI) and published by The May 18 Institute Chonnam National University.



Important Dates

  • Abstract Submission Deadline:                             March 10, 2025
  • Acceptance notification:                                         March 20, 2025
  • Paper Submission Deadline:                                  April 27, 2025
  • Presentation Material Submission Deadline:      May 3, 2025
  • Paper Presentation at WHRCF 2025:                    On a date between the 15th and 17th of May


Application Process

Submit an abstract (not exceeding 500 words) to the following address: whrcf@gic.or.kr

Please note that the following information must be included in your submission:

- The author’s name and affiliation

- A short bio of 100 words to be included in the abstract itself

- The author’s CV, including a relevant list of publications (maximum 800 words)

- The author’s contact details, including email address and telephone numbers

- All information should be submitted in MS-Word format.


Full Paper Submission

Selected authors must submit an advance draft of their papers prior to the Forum. Papers should:

- At least 2,000 words, at most 5,000words (excluding bibliography)

- Follow the APA style guidelines

- Be submitted in MS Word format

- Adhere to the submission deadline of April 27, 2025


Paper Presentation at WHRCF

-Accommodation costs (3 nights) will be covered for presenters coming from abroad. (In this regard, as the event operates on a self-funding basis, participants will be responsible for their own airfare and other travel-related expenses.)
