Intelligence Operations and AI in Thailand’s Democratic Erosion

Electoral integrity is a core feature of democratic governance because it enables citizens to participate under conditions of fairness, transparency, and informed choice. In the digital era, however, electoral processes are increasingly shaped by disinformation and influence campaigns that manipulate public debate. In Thailand, these developments form part of a broader process of democratic erosion. Rather than relying solely on overt repression, state and para-state actors shape political competition by influencing what information circulates, which voices gain visibility, and whose legitimacy is undermined.

.
Thailand thus reflects a shift from overt authoritarian control toward more subtle forms of manipulation. Participation is not necessarily suppressed, but structured through coordinated information strategies that shape how politics is perceived and understood. As AI intensifies these dynamics, democratic erosion is likely to deepen unless stronger mechanisms for accountability, verification, and public literacy are established.
