Well-Aging, Human Rights, and Digital Inclusion in the Age of AI

SHIN Gyonggu [Executive Director, Gwangju International Center]

Well-aging is often thought of only in terms of health management or longevity. Yet in an era when AI and digital technologies are reshaping everyday life, aging well is not simply about living longer; it is about preserving one’s dignity, staying connected to society, and maintaining the ability to make one’s own choices. Well-aging is therefore not only a matter of welfare, but also a matter of human rights and digital inclusion.

Well-aging can no longer be explained in the language of health management alone. In the age of AI, well-aging is a concept that asks at once about the right to live with dignity, the right to remain connected to society, the right to learn and choose, and the right not to be excluded. A good society is not the one in which technology advances the fastest, but the one that leaves no one behind amid technological change. When we view well-aging through the lens of human rights and digital inclusion, we can redesign not only technology policy and welfare policy in the age of AI, but also the very structures of social and political participation. This is the future of well-aging: one in which older adults remain connected with dignity and continue to participate as responsible citizens.
