The Role of Women’s Civil Organizations in Creating Digital-based Civic Spaces

Korea has had two topics recently that highlighted the intersection of digital spaces, technology, and patriarchal exploitation of women. One is Netflix's original reality show "The Influencer," and the other is the deepfake sex crime scandals disseminated via Telegram.

This discussion space should also include conversations about what is needed to restore the sense of safety for current survivors of harm. Given that the harm is highly likely to continue, creating conditions for digital spaces to be safe for victims is not easy. Nevertheless, we should explore whether the current practice of simply deleting harmful content is the only and absolute method to aid victims in their recovery, and whether there are legal gaps we can address. Through these discussions, we can share our thoughts on restoring victims' sense of safety.
