Peace Problem in Korean Society: Issues and Alternatives

Francis Daehoon Lee

[Director of the Trans-Education for Peace Institute (TEPI), PEACEMOMO]

The ongoing global bloc confrontation is manifesting regionally as a war crisis in Northeast Asia, and policy failures regarding ecological and social crises and divisions are resulting in a multifaceted crisis encompassing war, ecology, and extremism. It is necessary to learn from the fact that, through the process of narrowly interpreting the concept of “our peace”, violent crises have deepened through complex interconnections across broad domains.

Diplomacy must undergo comprehensive reform amid re-ignited arms races and nuclear competition, weakened responses to the climate crisis, and rising risks of armed conflict in Northeast Asia. It must transcend bloc-driven diplomacy, diplomacy subordinated to military security, and diplomacy of narrow national interests. A community of vision and awareness transcending national boundaries must emerge to respond to complex crises, necessitating multilateral cooperation, and a comprehensive diplomatic innovation that replaces narrow national-interest diplomacy is necessary. In order to manage the military conflict crisis, peace public diplomacy must be fully mainstreamed by both governments and citizens.
