How Can Human Rights be Protected from the Threat of the Climate Crisis?

Dobong-gu’s Net-Zero Roadmap and Engaging Residents in Climate Action

LEE Dong-jin [Mayor of Seoul Metropolitan Government Dobong-gu Office]

It is a great pleasure to meet you all. I am Lee, Dong-jin, head of Dobong-gu.

In recent years, heatwaves and heavy rains occurred frequently across the world, including Europe, North America, and Asia, causing numerous deaths and injuries as well as property damage. Over the past decade the Republic of Korea also experienced a series of weather disasters, which killed 194 people, displaced 200,000 people, and cost 12 trillion won in recovery and restoration works. Socio-economic damage from extreme weather conditions such as heatwaves, heavy rains, and cold waves is getting ever more serious.

I hope that Dobong-gu will serve as another role model for your endeavor to achieve net zero emissions. Let's work together to protect human rights from the imminent threat of the climate crisis! Dobong-gu will be with you in that endeavor!

I hope that our concerted action will help protect the dignity and worth of everyone in our communities, in Asia and in the world. This concludes my presentation.

“Think globally, act locally.”
