Human Rights, Corruption and Trust in a New Social Contract

Helena Olsson

[Senior Programme Officer of Raoul Wallenberg Institute]

The intervention explains why RWI for years has pointed to a need to shed more light on the nexus between human rights and corruption, and to bridge gaps between actors and action for human rights vs for countering corruption. It also introduces reasons why a human rights-based approach to anti-corruption, and to local governance overall, can be useful in strengthening the social contract.

As for trust, stating the obvious and acknowledging the simplification of complex issues, improving human rights, participation and transparency in governance is likely to increase trust. So is dealing with corruption to improve public services and rule of law, with the dignity of residents at the center.
