An Obligation Resulting from the Past
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 was the response international law gave to the horrors of the Second World War and to the crimes of National Socialism. Nuremberg played an important role in Nazi history, in particular because of the Party Rallies held here and the so-called “Racial Laws” which were proclaimed in this city. However, after the war, Nuremberg was also the venue of the “Nuremberg Trials” when leading Nazis were brought to justice for their crimes – an important step for international criminal law.

But apart from conflicts in the public sphere, worldwide conflicts also radiate into the local urban society, such as for example currently the war in Gaza. In these contexts, local governance has to create suitable frameworks and spaces for exchange and sharing for its citizens. It can initiate dialogue and act as a moderator. Thus in the spirit of all-party involvement and on the basis of universal human rights, this may strengthen civic spaces in Nuremberg in the future too.
