Biodiversity Programs Engaging with Citizens - A case Example of Suncheon Council for Sustainable Development

HEO Gyeonghee Secretary General, Suncheon Council for Sustainable Development

Suncheon Citizens Biodiversity Exploration Program As a program to explore urban streams and parks, the Suncheon Citizens Biodiversity Exploration Program was launched in 2019 and marks the 4th anniversary this year. We launched this program around urban parks and streams, in an effort to encourage citizens to have more interest in the biodiversity of their neighborhood. In the Suncheon Citizens Biodiversity Exploration Program, experts and non-experts work together to explore and keep records of the biodiversity ecosystems in urban streams and parks while also sharing the records with each other and drawing attention to biodiversity. This program became very popular among citizens, who showed greater interest and participation in the biodiversity activities.

Our projects and programs mentioned above serve as a good example that shows how citizens’ activities can influence the policy making of a local government. In January 2022, the Suncheon City Government established the Ordinance on Prevention of Wild Bird Collision and the Ordinance on Protection of Wildlife and Promotion of Biodiversity.
