The 10th World Human Rights Cities Forum

The World Human Rights Cities Forum has reached a milestone today by reaching its 10th anniversary. A cornerstone for Gwangju's democracy and human rights, and an inspiration for the world, the 10th WHRCF has started today in a hybrid format, being  live broadcast-ed on our YouTube Channel.

Despite the challenges that Covid-19 has placed above us and thanks to the latest technologies, the 10th World Human Rights Forum has started today and runs until Saturday, October 10.

Today's Opening Ceremony and Plenary Sessions

Keynote Speech

Audrey Azoulay, the General Director of UNESCO opened the 10th edition of the WHRCF, focusing on the importance cities are playing in nowadays world emphasizing on their essential parts as role models and drivers for change.

Featured Speaker

Michelle Bachelet, the High Commissioner for Human Rights from UN OHCHR has participated for the first time in the event by addressing a keynote speech on the importance and critical role that local authorities and municipal governments play in human rights policy making.

Opening Remarks

In his opening remarks, Gwangju's Mayor Lee Yong-sup, talked about the importance of this Forum and the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization movement. He also pointed on the unprecedented situation of having to hold the Forum online.

Plenary Session 

Theme: Human Rights Cities: Addressing Social Unrest, Learning from the Historical Past.

Speakers from different countries such as Germany , Korea, Tunisia, Indonesia and Colombia, talked about the importance of remembering the past, learning from it and educate the younger generations for a better understanding of human rights and the role they play in our global world.
